The Sun is Shining, the Weather is SWEET! It’s ZOKU time!

I’m so far behind on posts and I have so much to talk about, but I’m going to step away from the drama of the last few weeks of pregnancy and the sadness of losing a dear friend to be happy for the season.

It’s spring. In usually sweltering hot Florida, April is the yummiest month of the year. The sun heats up the pool but not so much that you can only lay like a beached whale. Babies run around naked in the backyard and sit in sandboxes (the boys at least, I would think girls should wear some kind of sand/privates protector, but I guess I’ll find out soon enough!)

My first attempt at Zoku pops: Peach Fudgies. Not too shabby, eh?

New years resolution: sewing

Drunk Penguin (holding so he doesn't fall over)

If you recall, I wanted to teach myself to see as part of my quarterly resolution.

My first project was an adorable stuffed penguin. Probably a bad choice for a first project just because of the amount of curves in the pattern. I found the pattern on purlbee.com, a site that comes up with adorable patterns and sells fabric in a batch to suit the pattern. First time I made it, the beak was funkdified so I scrapped that one and restarted. It came out ok, but looks a little bit like it had a stroke at some point!

Diaper Inserts

Next project was diaper inserts. I should have started here. No one sees these so they don’t have to be pretty, just functional. These were made to fit a small Gdiaper and I’ve played with the sizes quite a bit.

I used microfiber towels (Walmart.com) as inners (folded three times) and then thin flannel over the top (I bought fleece from fabric.com that is way too thick) I got the flannel bundles at Joanns. They cost about $4 each from diapers.com and mine cost about $1 each. I’ve also tried a swaddling blanket as the outer which worked fine and these were freebies from the hospital so my total was down to about 60 cents each.

Pillowcase

My last project was super easy and looks awesome. My son recently moved to a toddler bed, but he falls out quite a bit. While he’s not ready for a pillow in the bed, I made him a pillowcase and we leave it by the opening, so that when he falls out, he falls on something soft. Last night he spent about an hour on the floor before we plonked him back in bed with fingers so tightly crossed that he’d fall back asleep fast. And he did.

Jeez, I love that little man. Even in the middle of the night, when all I want to do is sleep, I could hold him forever.

DIY Diapers

We been potty training our Little Man since he was 10 months old (I use the term potty training lightly because it’s more of a training him to get in the habit of using the potty, rather than training him to know when he needs to use) and to me this is very normal. I was out of diapers at 18 months old, as were my brothers and the nephew that was raised in England. To many of my American friends, I’m completely insane (for more reasons than just this). Whether you’re ok with changing diapers at three or four or if you’d rather get it done by 18 months, one thing is for sure – kids use a s**t load of diapers. [Read more...]

I’m dreaming of a … yellow nursery

Nursery Inspiration: PaintI’m so far in lalaland today that it’s going to take a hurricane to pull me out of it. I had a whirlwind weekend; we celebrated Christmas with Family A (my side). The whole family flew and drove in for the weekend – one brother and family from their home in Cayman Islands (en route to their new home in Vancouver!!), one brother and family from North Florida and parents from home on southern Bahamas. It was fun and frantic. Some kind of a mix between the Family Stone, the Griswolds, and the Christmas Story family.

But when the families started to leave I realized that this meant the next chapter is looming. And that next chapter is Baby #2. It was really brought home to me this weekend twice in my shower! Once when I simply started thinking about how I will manage work and 2 babies, and the second time when I slipped and fell, all in slow motion realizing that I couldn’t fall on my spine (we have a step down shower and I was destined to hit the edge of the step) and I couldn’t fall on my tummy either. I ended up on my knee, bumping my hip as well and scaring the living daylights out of myself. I cried (sobbed), felt like an idiot, and had to unearth the dynamic doppler to check the baby wasn’t hurt.

I am so far from being ready for the baby it’s crazy. Her room has no light. Meaning there is no light bulb, no light fixture, nothing. No curtains (which is good when you have no light), no furniture, just boxes and boxes of stuff that needs to find a home. I’ve been collecting ideas on Pinterest, and now I feel like it’s time to start an inspiration board. They say you have to start with one thing. We have the walls painted so I guess that’s the starting point! They are the pale blue color, the majority of textiles will be yellow I think and the accents gray. I’ll keep you posted!

Paint Choices

I went to Sherwin WIlliams this morning to pick out paint colors. The house isn’t huge so we need to stick to just a few colors – one main color which is yellow based, a blue for the bedrooms, and possibly a gray for the baby’s room. The aim – beachy, summery, cool but still light.

Here’s the colors laid into an inspiration board. The only issue I have is the Begonia pink (SW 6599). I don’t like it, but it’s the only picture I could find with the other colors on one picture.

The colors are:

Sherwin Williams Watery (SW 6478)

Sherwin Williams Friendly Yellow (SW 6680)

Sherwin Williams Light French Gray (SW oo55)
